I like the graphics for the headings and masthead too. There is however, another confusing navigation element; the service times and directions link on the masthead image. If you could survey a hundred visitors I wonder how many of them would find that link or the ones on the post-it note. They look good, but normally those things just display text. The whole site has a well balanced theme. "The rock," is a nic-name for Jesus.

whoops, wrong icon file, huh Scrivs :) Don't worry, when I was redesiging my juiced site, I included random photos in the upper left corner and accidently through an 800 x 600 image in there. Took me a few times to realize what in the hell happened to my layout when that photo was being shown :)

Mmm, maybe time to ditch the "What I like" and "What I don't like" bits and just list the sites. Although you often have something to say with what you don't like, "Imagery, Colors," etc. tells me nothing. No meat. Since I've started with a querulous tone I may as well continue... Is it just me, or are religious organisations (specifically Christian, be they churches or whatever) somewhat over-represented in lovely CSS-based design (nice site btw)? What's up with that? I'm not suggesting that they're over-represented in showcase sites such as this, or saying anything about the designers themselves. I'm just surprised at how savvy the people behind these churches/ organisations are in employing top web designers that use cutting edge CSS... It's just bizarre to me. :)

Churches are trying to stray from the "churchy" look. They're trying to appeal to younger audiences, and that's why they make the "cutting-edge" sites. If someone hears about the church, visits the web site and is impressed, they could be more drawn to the church.

As for Eric's comment, if the code looks pretty and it works well, why should they waste their time making sure it validates? Assuming the designer has other projects to work on, I would think the time spent on making sure it validates could be better spent elsewhere.

love it. will be great to see the site grow. Martin -why wouldnt a church want a site that was up to the coding excellence of sites in other areas? A goal of a Christian is to do the best work he/she can to honor Jesus Christ who gave them the talent, or perhaps in this case the ability to hire a great designer, who may or may not be Christian. Bringing standards based designs everywhere helps the web. And for years Faith based sites have been extremely mediochre sites at best (apart from the really large organizations, even some of them are pretty badly designed), mostly made by the Church members themselves (sitebuilder and frontpage atrocities) just to have a web presence.... thats now changing and thats good.

I can see the reasoning behind the yellow sub-nav. The main nav calls out the different audiences the church is trying to reach, and provides them with more focused information, while the yellow sections offers general information about the church itself. Interesting choice, I think.
