What I Like

I like the fact that he had the balls (or nerve to ignore 800x600 users, whichever way you look at) to stretch his site wide. The 4-column is really the only way to go if you wish to incorporate this much content on a single page.

The color scheme stays out of the way and the typography keeps everything readable.

What I Don't Like

I love content, but there might be too much content going on here. However, since the focus is on design the design of so much content is good. I'm just not sure where my eyes should go.

You're right Paul... those lines wig me out... they are way to intense

    Andrew (http://kempt.org)

  4. 4

I don't think it's that the lines are intense. David might be able to nullify their effects just by adding a dark outer glow to the text in the header. True enough, there are a lot of these sites, but his has a rating system... ooooh.

Thanks for putting me up scrivs, I just recently realised (after the stylegala.com launch) that there are a LOT of CSS promotion sites popping up everywhere this summer. I dont intend to be another thumbnail css gallery, but more of a useful resource for web designers and such. Lets just see how it grows.

    David (http://www.stylegala.com)

  7. 7

The lines on this site don't bother as much as those diagonal lines bother me when I see them on every CSS site. Just like the two-column dropshadowed craze, the diagonal lines seem to be everywhere. I almost expect it to have a dropshadow. It's a nice site though.

Hey.. please stop polluting the web with this css craze... you are starting to make yourself ridiculous with all this self-praise...

Hmm, so people can't make websites about CSS now? Do you need to be a card-carrying member of the Design Fab 5 to make a valid contribution to the world of CSS? That's like saying there should be only ONE magazine about graphic design because they all feature the same designers anyway. The hubris is getting thick in here. On a serious note, the Stylegala site is nicely put together. Organized well, and looks clean and crisp. And hopefully having more than one or two venues for CSS-driven website design will create some diversity and alternative opinions on what's considered *good*. This won't be the last of its kind, and that's good for the web.

    WebDesigner

  10. 10

Hubris? Nice. Let me explain for you since you are not seeing the whole picture here. Let's say there are 10 graphic design magazines out there, you wouldn't expect to see all 10 having the same articles would you? No. However, when it comes to these type of gallery sites, unfortunately there are only so many well-designed CSS sites out there. If you look at all of them you will see the same sites. Alex (CSS Beauty) is a little more lenient when it comes to letting sites in so many times you will see sites that I don't let in go on his site. That's cool. But when you begin to have 4,5,6 of these CSS sites and they all have the same content, then it doesn't help either the community or the person running the site. I really don't care since at the moment people visit my site. It just sucks to see people put hardwork into an effort that people might ignore. Now since you made me stray wildly away from the topic at hand (the beautiful Sytlegala) I will tell everyone else that this discussion concerning my "hubris" is done with. If you wish to have an email conversation with me I have no problem with that. Thanks.

This site layout looks very similar to Simplebits.com - is that deliberate?

  12. 12

Since you started a discussion about what stylegala.com is and is not, I might as well add some things. As said before, Im not opening another thumbnail promotion gallery, you guys (Alex & Scrivs) already did that with bravour. There are plenty design portals out there, and to the contrary of what you might think, Stylegala.com will evolve to something quite unique in time. I just opened the site two days ago so give me a break... The gallery is there now and it acts as a css design showcase/portal yes, but my intentions are not to re-invent the wheel.

    stylegala.com (http://www.stylegala.com)

  13. 13

No offense, but have you looked around on the web lately?... there are hundreds of these kind of css-gallery sites around... And most of them are good (I don't want to offend yours), but after my usual daytrip around all of them (let's say my 10 favs) I end up more and more seeing the same sites. And if you're not opening another thumbnail promotion gallery, than I must be looking at the wrong site? I think it would definitely be worthwhile if, in this case, you did re-invent the wheel and showed us something really different.

    Judas

  14. 14

Well, since everyone else has metioned that there are quite a few of these sites popping up lately... I will say that I think the design is beautiful. The lines don't bother me a bit. I love how you give us the chance to rate the site. Very cool extra.

    Sazzy

  15. 15

Oh you fast and furious web surfers. If the new guy at work has a purple t-shirt the first day, would you write home saying "whatever, just another purple t-shirt guy" and expect him to wear a purple t-shirt everyday? I have many ideas for stylegala.com in the future. Just give me a break and let the site evolve before being so judgemental. I agree, there are many CSS promotion sites out there (I just found them too) and my intention is not to sit on the same bench. Just wait and see.

    stylegala.com (http://www.stylegala.com)

  16. 16

Personally, I have no problem at all with another CSS gallery site popping up. The more the merrier. I don't think the magazine analogy is fair - web sites by their nature lend themselves to quick visits and, without the monitary commitment of paper mags, I don't think readers mind some repeated content. As it is I visit CSS Vault and CSS Beauty every day - my tastes lie more in line with Beauty but Vault is the daddy. I don't see too much overlap between the two... I'm going to add StyleGala to my bookmarks and I'll probably be a regular there too. Well done to all of you and thanks for putting in the research time for the benefit of the rest of us.

    Mike Stenhouse (http://www.donotremove.co.uk)

  17. 17

Besides, it's up to the visitor to decide which website(s) to visit. I can't see any harm in more websites like this one, as competition only pushes the makers of these sites to make them even better.

    Jan (http://www.scanactive.com/)

  18. 18

Well, from my perspective, I think it’s nice to compare/contrast comments from both sites. I like Stylegala’s rating system and I like Scriv’s What I Like/What I Don't (which is how I put together my own design scrapbook). I’m not a designer and am actually very happy to see how different people react to the same design. Thanks to you both for contributing the time & effort!

    Michael Pierce

  19. 19

The site is okay. It's best feature is the logo up top, but honestly I have a hard time with people that rely on one typeface to brand their site. I just don't see anything that would make me pick this site out of the entries inside itself. I'm not saying it's bad, but merely it has very high expectations (with the competition) and falls short IMO. I'd like to see somthing new, something different (not just content wise, but design wise). As of now, I'm good with Vault, Beauty and TWS. I might add some more if I feel they're deserving. But as for the moment, none have sparked my interest.

    Kyle (http://www.warpspire.com/)

I think it is a great site and a great idea. Wish I'd of thought of it....darn.

    Nick Rigby (http://www.nickrigby.com)

  21. 21

I think it's a lovely design and I can't believe that people are against the promotion of css-based layouts. If the web standards community stays so insular and cliquey then the world will be using tables for layout for a long time to come. So there's more than one css gallery? Whatever will people do? Make a choice? I'll say it again, it's a wonderful site and here's hoping that many more attempt to champion css rather than nitpick and argue.

    Reverend Dan

  22. 22

You meantion that loads of these kinds of sites are cropping up., Besides this one, the site i'm commenting on and CSSbeauty - what rae the others? Surely three sites is not 'loads'?

    mark (http://www.markboulton.co.uk)

  23. 23

You hope this is the last of these types of sites? 99.999999999999% of all web sites out there are still using tables and font tags. I mention the "css vault" to other "web designers" and they have no idea what I'm talking about. We need *more* of these types of sites. You probably started the vault to expose CSS and standards to more people right? Don't forget to keep spreading the word Scrivs... We need *way* more people spreading the word! Anyway, I enjoy reading the small reviews all these sites post! Back on topic, Stylegalas design is pretty nice and it's been added to my rss list :)

    John Serris (http://phonophunk.phreakin.com/)

  24. 24

I think that there needs to be lots more of these sites actually. I could care less if there are lots of similar sites... isn't that the case with just about any type of genre of site on the web? Why should there only be one CSS type site around? Why should there only be 30 CSS type sites around?

    Todd Lambert (http://toddlambert.com)

  25. 25

SIte is quite good and the goal is honorable. Not only the CSS vault should carry the flag. The more, the better i say. Keep good work guys.

  26. 26

Stylegala fails on usability imo, as does CSS Beauty, in that the archives just have link names, what use is that to me? I want thumbnails to get a quick idea if a site's worth looking at, telling me the site title is useless, it means nothing.

The only feature this redesign has over the past is the community news. Personally I liked the previous design better, neverless I still find myself visiting the site.

    dan

  31. 31

Thanks scrivs. Wide is the new high, it's just a matter of time before we see more & more web sites go 1024. Anyway, hopefully I can do the preferences panel in a not so far distant future, with the ability to switch wideness.

    David (http://www.stylegala.com)

  32. 32

Yeah I have 2 wide sites coming out shortly.

    Scrivs (http://9rules.com/)

  33. 33

I must say, David's site is raising the bar of expectations. Stylegala definitely promotes information delivery and user interactivity when it comes to critiquing and talking 'bout design. With the elements such as the graphical rating and the new public news, Stylegala is one to hold on to.

    Fernando dunn II (http://www.fdiidesign.com/)

  34. 34

I think the site is great, but I still don't dig the 1024 size. I never view sites in a full screen window, and when I use NetNewsWire, I have my column of feeds over on the left. There isn't enough room left over for the site.

    kadavy (http://www.kadavy.net)

  35. 35

It's great to see Stylegala going through this metamorphosis and still look great. David is being very creative with the goals of Stylegala and is starting something new and different. But I think how it developes and grows will depend mostly on its ability to attract and engage visitors in contributing via comments etc... It's a great start. Css sites: Aren't the Vault and other Css sites really Css blogs? Comments are the real content. That, of course is different on every site even when the showcased site is the same.

    Tim (http://ambaka.com)

  36. 36

I used to visit this site, but not anymore. After the redesign to drop 800x600, I deleted it from my list of links. Why visit a site that clearly doesn't give a crap about its viewers? I keep Opera's hotlist most of the time, which makes my screen resolution of 1024x768 look more like 800x600. I like to watch my incoming email or use my assorted search panels or have my bookmarks open so I can just click down the list as I'm done viewing each site. But hey, if they're willing to pay to replace my 20" flat screen Trinitron so I can have 1024x768 of viewing space *and* still have my hotlist open without eye strain, I'd be more than happy to visit again.

    chris

  37. 37

I like. Know your audience I guess. Most people looking to view good css design are going to be above 800x600. To those few who like to have bookmarks/hotlist/whatever in the left hand margin or don't maximize their browser (personally, I'd never do this. More viewing space the better), the right hand column is not exactly critical for regular viewers. If it's cut off, so what?

    Pierce (http://www.piercegleeson.com/auturgy/)

  38. 38

I don't visit it anymore. All he does is get defensive and uppity about any comment you make about a site. He gets all defensive and can't take constructive criticism about anything. The quality of the sites he links are questionable mnost of the time and his views on css leave a lot to be desired. The site has a clear bias towards neubix and its portfolio. It's just boring and he needs to grow up ( see his various petulant moans above). As for the latest design hmmm. Enough said.

    Carol

  39. 39

used to love it, he inplimented a forum just before this update - which promptly bombed - no one was posting i for one want to see more css galleries (supplying unique content) I still think theres too much emphasis on XHTML purism - design by formula and not enough emphasis on creative use of CSS, anyway back to this site - too much going on, not enough to keep my attention - he should take a tip from established mags like newstoday, pixelsurgeon and surfstation theyve got content presentation down to a T

In any case, there is a "Stylegala discussion" in the good and the evil..And for it, it is already a success.I think that it is a useful resource..I hope that it will encourage the people to use the standards..And do not discourage... (Metrostation Design)

    Emiliano Pennisi (http://www.peamarte.it/02/03.html)

  41. 41

I noticed the neubix connection too. Methinks he's either their biggest fan or he works for them. Yes I agree his "moderation" skills could do with cutting people some slack. I've seen posts disappear which were pretty innocuous. Slag off a nuebix site and you get shot down in flames. My advice is he should lighten up and stop linking neubix clone sites. (It's what they're very good at - plagiarising others work) This current redesign sucks. Contnet is all over the place and the whole site just seems overdone. Stylegala is definitely going downhill and scraping the bottom of the barrel with some of the sites it links.

    Dan

  42. 42

For what it's worth, I like Stylegala, and I like their new wide design. There's also now a thinner design available via a stylesheet switcher, for those with lower resolutions or smaller browser windows.

    paul haine (http://joeblade.com/)

  43. 43

I have to agree with dan. Stylegala is getting a bad name and has went down hill. The sites they link make me wonder sometimes. Presumably the "Worth a visit" section are sites that didn't make it. IMO some of these sites are far better than what they link in the main site. In their "Stylegala comment" introduction, some of the things they say about sites are a bit dubious to say the least. Do they really know their CSS stuff? Scanning through their links it does look like an advert for Neubix. I saw one of their sites was linked and wasn't standards and had poor css but got linked anyway. People commented it and they deleted the comments and got all stroppy about the comments. If you don't like a site and say so then you get threatened with being barred from posting or called disgusting for airing your views. I saw one guy getting accused of being disgusting for something I thought was fairly honest. I say if you have rules then prepare to stand by them and be judged upon them. Otherwise stop preaching to people and deleting their comments. Oh aye - I don't like this redesign mauch at all. Too in yer face.

  46. 46

Aww man.. so much hate (at least, as i see it). It's best I don't become judgemental here because I'm still very new to this. All I can say is, one more of CSS promotion site won't hurt. In fact, I got exposed to web standards from CZG, then here, then CSSBeauty, and most of the rest that have been mentioned above. Stylegala.com's design is great, I must say. I especially like the rating system. Great work there David!
